Here’s my two cents on small business assistance. GOVERNMENT, PAY YOUR VENDORS ON TIME! HOW THE HELL CAN YOU EXPECT SMALL BUSINESSES TO SURVIVE WHEN YOU CAN’T EVEN PAY NET 30?? AND THESE ARE FEDERAL FUNDS? THE NEW POLICY WITH TREASURY: YOU CAN NO LONGER PICK UP YOUR CHECK, THEY MAIL IT TO YOU INSTEAD. SO NOW THEIR EXCUSE IS NO LONGER “IT’S IN THE SYSTEM”… THE NEW EXCUSE IS “IT’S IN THE MAIL…”

I think that investing in a small business incubator is one efficient way to help out the entrepreneurs who’d like to start their businesses, but knowing how people “function” at job sites in the CNMI… there might be a lot of unfair treatment to all the businesses that would be part of the incubator. We should focus more on the “work ethics” of the people so that in doing so, businesses will probably progress smoothly and hopefully it will not fluctuate as time goes by but become a better improvement.

I do think that we must do more to cultivate entrepreneurship in the islands, and investing in a well-funded, well-run small business incubator is one way to do it. I would like to hear more from the community, and particularly from aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners, about other ways to stimulate and support small businesses in the CNMI. What can be done legislatively? What models from other places can we look to for guidance and ideas? What can be done through partnerships between the private and public sector? What do small businesses need in order to succeed in the CNMI?
